Women Owned Businesses from The Tech Garden Attend 15th Annual WISE Symposium

On April 25, the 15th Annual Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship (WISE) Symposium was held at SKY Armory in downtown Syracuse. The symposium is an all-day event offered to new entrepreneurs, and those active in the business community.

TTG Welcomes New Content Manager, Caitlin Moriarty

Caitlin Moriarty joins CenterState CEO as the Instructional Design Manager for The Tech Garden.
 
She will be researching, designing, and creating instructional content and assessment tools to support members of the The Tech Garden and GENIUS NY accelerator.
 
Previously, Moriarty was a member of The Tech Garden's Student Sandbox and awarded the Kauffman Entrepreneurship Engagement Fellowship. She also served as a facilitator and consultant for the Innovation and Disruptive Entrepreneurship Accelerator (IDEA) for student startups at Syracuse University.
 
She holds her M.A. in Arts Leadership Administration from the Janklow Arts Leadership Program and her B.M. in Music Industry and Marketing from Syracuse University. 

GENIUS NY 2.0 Now Accepting Applications From Startups Focused On Unmanned Systems, Hardware, Software And Analytics

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that applications are now being accepted for the second round of GENIUS NY – one of the world’s largest business competitions focused on unmanned systems, cross-connected platforms and other technology-based sectors. The year-long business accelerator is seeking applications from entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses focused on unmanned systems, hardware, software and analytics. The program will invest nearly $3 million in six finalist companies, including three grand prizes valued at up to $1 million, $600,000 and $400,000.

"The GENIUS NY competition has already transformed the business landscape of Central New York by enticing next generation entrepreneurs to establish roots in the Empire State," Governor Cuomo said. "By continuing to invest in the region’s unmanned systems sector and launching round two of the GENUIS NY competition, we can ensure New York remains a leader in growing the innovation economy, achieve the important economic and community goals of CNY Rising, and provide new opportunities and jobs to residents for decades to come."

TTG Welcomes New Member Mentis Technologies

Mentis Technologies, a cyber security focused business, is moving to The Tech Garden. CEO Brian Abbe says that sixty percent of computer virus infection occurs while browsing, and 75% of all corporate computers have been infected, which is why he is building an application to prevent computer virus infection. Antivirus software attempts to mitigate and protect after a virus and the Mentis product intends to prevent viruses infecting computers. While still in the product development phase, Mentis anticipates targeting small to large businesses, initially in healthcare, banking, and DoD.

New STEAM Exhibit at the Great New York State Fair Seeks Applications from Potential Participating Organizations

Exhibit Highlights Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics

The 2017 Great New York State Fair will feature a new exhibit highlighting exciting careers in several technical trades where the need for qualified workers is rising fast. The Fair is now accepting applications from potential exhibitors and participants for the STEAM exhibit that will be held in the Science and Engineering Building.
 
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.  The exhibit will feature hands-on activities, workshops and demonstrations aimed at stimulating creativity in young fairgoers and encouraging them to consider careers in related fields.  Federal government statistics indicate that employment in the science, technology, engineering and math fields will grow by 9 million by 2022.

SUNY Cortland Seeks Entrepreneurs to Start Business on their Campus

​Visitors know they can do a lot on the SUNY Cortland campus: Cheer on a sports team, attend a performance or presentation, and even experience Dowd Gallery. Now, they may also be able to turn an entrepreneurial dream into reality.
SUNY Cortland is looking for partners that complement its academic specialties to establish a new or expanding business on campus through the START-UP NY program. Qualified businesses could operate for 10 years without paying most state or local taxes, including income taxes for both the new business and its individual employees.
​
Since it was created in 2013 the state’s START-UP NY program has launched more than 200 businesses in partnership with colleges, creating more than 4,500 jobs.

Syracuse Students Win $100,000 Biz Plan Competition Prize

Syracuse University students Josh Aviv and Jaydeep Sathe receive $100,000 for the first place finish of their company SparkCharge at the New York Business Plan Competition at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany on Friday, April 28, 2017, at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany.

SparkCharge is a virtual member of  The Tech Garden's Clean Tech Center.

​The student startup competition is in its eighth year and gives out $500,000 in cash and additional business services to the winners. SEFCU, the Albany-based credit union, is the title sponsor of the event, which is hosted by SUNY Poly and the University at Albany.
